Our Story

Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. 1952.

That's where the Mobley story began.

CD Mobley and his son, Chris Mobley Sr., began their journey in retail in Lawrenceburg before moving to Fulton, Mississippi, and later Tupelo. In 1971, the family settled in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, opening The Varsity Shop on University Boulevard.

Over the next several decades, the business grew alongside the community it served. In 1985, the company became Mobley & Sons and relocated to McFarland Boulevard, establishing itself as one of the South's most respected destinations for men's clothing.

For generations, customers came to Mobley & Sons for suits, sport coats, shoes, gifts, and service they could trust.

What kept them coming back was never just the product.

It was the relationship.

Relationships built over years became relationships built over generations.

Then came the next chapter.

In 2017, Christopher Mobley joined the family business after graduating from The University of Alabama. While respecting the foundation that had been built before him, he saw an opportunity to connect with a new generation of customers.

they were dressing differently, working differently, and living differently.

Around the same time, an idea born among friends in Tuscaloosa would help change the trajectory of the business.

Christopher had created a collection of Alabama basketball apparel featuring the phrase "Tide Hoops" in script. One day, while looking at the design, he realized that removing the word "Hoops" left behind something even stronger: a clean script Tide logo.

What started as a simple observation quickly became one of the most recognizable logos in Alabama apparel.

In 2019, as demand continued to grow, the family opened a second store near campus under the Christopher Mobley name. The store gave the brand a stronger presence closer to the University of Alabama and introduced a different approach to retail.

It combined performance clothing, collegiate apparel, and a modern customer experience designed for the next generation.

The new store featured sleek branding, including a logo with the letter M and the Roman numeral III, representing three generations of the Mobley family in the retail clothing business.

Then the world changed.

Just months after opening, COVID accelerated trends that were already reshaping retail. Customers embraced performance fabrics, online shopping, remote work, and more versatile wardrobes.

Mobley adapted with them, introducing Vuori to their market, and becoming the atleisure leader.

Covid passed, and the Christopher Mobley store became the University of Alabama collegiate apparel leader and a must see store experience on home football weekends

At the same time, relationships that had been built over decades in Tuscaloosa were creating opportunities beyond Alabama.

Through football weekends, weddings, road trips, and years of serving customers, the Mobley brand found a natural second home in Athens, Georgia.

In 2022, the Mobley brand found a natural second home in Five Points Athens, Georgia.

In 2025, the company expanded again with the opening of its Downtown Athens flagship.

Today, Mobley Downtown Athens and Mobley Tuscaloosa operate with the same philosophy, the same standards, and many of the same brands. Whether you're visiting us in Alabama or Georgia, the experience is intentionally the same.

As the company continued to grow, another realization emerged.

Customers no longer viewed Mobley & Sons and Christopher Mobley as separate businesses.

The future wasn't two brands.

It was one.

In 2026, the decision was made to unite Mobley & Sons and Christopher Mobley under a single name: Mobley.

The Tuscaloosa Campus Store had accomplished what it was designed to do. It introduced a new generation of customers to the brand, launched new ideas, and helped shape the future of the company.

Today, those ideas live on within a single unified Mobley brand.

The Tuscaloosa operation now operates from one flagship location on McFarland Boulevard, bringing together the best of both concepts under one roof: custom clothing, luxury menswear, collegiate apparel, and grooming.

But the company was never simply in the clothing business.

It was in the relationship business.

Clothing was just the beginning.

The same principles that built Mobley — relationships, hospitality, service, and community — eventually created opportunities far beyond retail.

In 2024, the family introduced Captain's Club on Lake Tuscaloosa, a waterfront destination built around boating, dining, recreation, and life on the water.

A place to gather, celebrate, and spend time with family and friends.

The following year, the opportunity arose to acquire and reimagine NorthRiver Yacht Club.

That vision became The Westerfield Club.

Built around golf, dining, family, and community, Westerfield represents the next evolution of the company's commitment to hospitality and experience.

Today, Westerfield serves as the umbrella for a growing collection of hospitality, recreation, and lifestyle ventures built around one simple idea:

Create places people genuinely want to be.

From Mobley Tuscaloosa.

To Mobley Athens.

To Captain's Club.

To Westerfield.

What started as a family clothing store has evolved into something much larger.

A collection of brands rooted in the South.

Built around relationships.

Driven by hospitality.

Inspired by community.

And designed for generations to come.
